Provins - A medieval city

UNESCO World Heritage

The city of Provins recently won the title of “City of Art and History” and is inscribed on the UNESCO List of Humanity World Heritage. With a unique heritage in France and a series of activities based on the theme of the Middle Ages, the city of Provins takes its visitors back in time, into a world of lords, ladies and knights.

As soon as they arrive in the Visitors’ House, tourists are bathed in an atmosphere redolent of this medieval heritage. An audiovisual presentation recounts the eventful history of Provins, and a large model shows the town as it must have been in the Middle Ages.

Passport-type formulas enable visits to monuments to be combined with entry to certain events. For those wishing to visit the city on foot, the Tourist Office has designed a walking tour with signposting to enable the many sights in the city to be viewed. With its centuries-old architecture and the restoration plan which has been set in train, Provins is the city in France that best illustrates the medieval period in France.

Among the many architectural jewels in the city, there are the famous Tour César, symbol of the town, the collegiate church of Saint Quiriace, Saint Ayoul's church, the ramparts, the fortified gates, the 150 Norman and Gothic halls, and nearly 10 km of underground passages!

The Grange aux Dîmes (tithe barn) which housed the former covered market, offers an accurate and realistic re-creation of the scenes and atmosphere of the old medieval Champagne fairs. Audio guides are available in French, English, German and Chinese, to help you relive the atmosphere of one of the biggest fairs in Europe, at the heart of the Middle Ages. Many old houses, as well the Norman house containing the Museum of Provins and its region, reflect a prosperous past.
